Today I got to work out with one of my favorite people! He’s not a client, but a friend and he’s so much fun! I started working out with Aaron over a year ago through a non-profit called The Healthy Me Project. I was paired with an adult who has Down syndrome to work out once a week with. We push each other to move faster (he’s super competitive!), we talk about football and watch re-caps of games from our treadmills, we laugh and tease each other and then I go home feeling like nothing can get me down! He definitely makes everything brighter!
I have a passion for health and fitness, as many can probably guess J I believe EVERYONE can reach their highest potential health and fitness wise. I believe that what I do can help those with auto immune disorders (we work on strength training but also work on destressing the body and mind. Major components to keeping the system strong). I believe I can help people lose weight if they are willing to put in the time and effort. I believe I can help make EVERYONE feel stronger in their lives. I believe I can help prevent injuries and help those suffering from previous injuries. I believe I can help everyone. And I believe in my clients. Sometimes more than they believe in themselves.
One of my favorite things is working out with those who have put limits on themselves… or better yet…working with those who have had limits put on them. We have Pilates Programs at the studio for adults with disabilities that have been designed specifically for them. My workouts with Aaron are designed just for him to help build his smaller muscles, help develop his core for better posture (what a difference a year makes!), help his balance, his foot stance, his confidence, and more. He has come so far and I am so incredibly proud of him!
One of my favorite things is working with clients who don’t know and understand how strong they actually are. Aaron is not one of those people! Aaron believes he can do anything. And after seeing him do two minutes of planking, you bet I’m a believer too that he can definitely do anything. Just as I believe every one of my clients can do anything. Will it take time to build up to a two-minute plank series? Of course! But that’s what my teachers and I are here for. We are here to help build you up to that plank. To help your endurance. To help you feel proud of what you are accomplishing.
I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence or if I have become more aware while I’m at the gym, but I notice people of all types working out. Of course, there’s me and Aaron. But there is also a gentleman in a wheelchair who works out at the same time as us, and then I notice men and women of all sizes and all ages. There are people who probably haven’t been to the gym in a long time (maybe ever) and then there are the cross fitters. There’s the man with limited motion on one side of his body who looks as though he may have suffered from a stroke in his past. He works out with a trainer. There are the high school football players, moms with their young daughters, fathers with their young sons. There are people from all types of lifestyles that work from machine to machine.
I see all these different people, all with different stories as to why they are working out and all I can think is…what’s my excuse for skipping a workout? What’s my excuse for not pushing myself hard for at least an hour a day? Sure. I’m tired and I’ve worked with clients all day on my feet. I just want to relax. I’m just getting over a cold. I don’t want to. (I’m just being real here!) And I realize if they can do it, I can do it. So, I push myself. And I’ll push my clients too. We are trained to know what limits the body has as Pilates instructors. Most don’t even come close to pushing their limits. Mostly based on fear. But that’s the job of your trainer. To help you fight those fears.
To all out there that don’t think you can. I assure you, you can. Do not put limits on yourself! I know you can do it. If I can, I assure you, you can to. Let’s do this!
