People have come to me over the years asking my opinion on how they can become healthier. What should they give up? What should they change? I used to give them a list of all the things they should add to their diets and take out. It hasn't been until recently that I have started answering this question very differently.
"What should I give up in my diet, Melissa?"
My answer? Nothing.
I have watched so many people go on diets where they completely clean out their cupboards and live without fat, sugar, and junk food for weeks. Then the inevitable happens. They binge and feel guilty. I only notice this cycle because I did it when living in Los Angeles. I would be the healthiest I'd ever been. Then after the whatever I was getting ready for was over, I'd eat a bag of cookies. It was a vicious cycle.
Research has shown that it takes thirty days to establish a new habit. So why not start slowly? Add one new good habit to your daily routine every couple of weeks. Or even just one a month. Allow those habits slowly become a way of life. As you begin adding healthier habits to your diet, you'll notice the bad habits slowly start being replaced. When you start your meal with a salad, you're adding fiber which in turn will help you to eat less of your main meal. When you fill up on healthy foods, you're less likely to eat as much refined sugar. And when you add water to your diet, you automatically feel fuller. When you add exercise to your lifestyle you also will notice you might start cutting out habits that are unhealthy as well.
So don't drive yourself crazy trying to eliminate everything unhealthy in your life. Take it slow. Things will change. The chemicals in our body need time to detox. Don't torture yourself eliminating everything all at once. Here are some things to add and some helpful ways to detox. Just pick one to start!
